Kiss the Hippo Coffee
50 George St, Richmond TW9 1HJ, UK
Editor's Review
Richmond has a surprisingly quiet history when it comes to speciality coffee. Whilst it was home to one of the earliest Taylor St. Baristas (as a concession, later a full shop), things went very quiet until the appearance of Coffeeology. Perhaps spurred on by the following they got, Kiss the Hippo has arrived on to this affluent Zone 4 High St.
It seems a bit cheap of us to recycle the motto they use on their insta profile - Creating Sensory Experiences - but it just seems so on the mark. Eschewing the design we've grown used to with speciality shops, KTH has been fitted out in a clean, white Scandi style. The professionalism of the team is evident, and it almost feels like they are applying fine-dining service approach to coffee.
Coffee is roasted on-site with the Loring roaster gleaming beyond a glass wall for all to see. The house coffee - George St. blend (named after their street) - is well balanced and rounded, offering a familiar profile to those early in their specialty coffee journey. Also on offer was an exceptionally well executed Ethiopian single origin. Beyond the custom decal coffee machine is a Kinto filter brew bar. Plenty of varied seating over two floors, a great local buzz and by all accounts a roaring success of a coffee shop in Richmond. Brunch, salads, and light lunch are also on offer.
