Knave Café

119 West 56th Street, New York, NY 10019

Editor's Review

Located within Le Parker Meridien Hotel, the Knave cafe and bar has been around for only a decade, but it has an ancient, medieval atmosphere that seems quite a bit older, and for atmosphere alone it's definitely worth a visit if you are traipsing around this area just south of Central Park. The huge vaulted ceilings in this former public passageway connecting 57th street to the hotel space on 56th (you can enter the cafe through the hotel lobby, or directly from 57th St.) have been sculpted, gilded, painted, and draped to look like a cathedral nave – thus the name – and along with organ music and a lot of candles, this is a rather stunning spot for a coffee or a cocktail.

They brew Stumptown from morning until 11pm daily, and the bar keeps going quite a bit later. The also serve pastries until 3pm, sandwiches 11am-3pm, and evening appetizers, cheeses and light snacks. Plus you get a lovely biscotti with every coffee. One of the cooler hotel bars in the city, the Knave is one of a kind, and though it's not cheap – an espresso will run you $6, and the specialty cocktails start around $20– this is a destination that many will feel is worth splurging on.
