La Fabrica Girona
17004, Carrer de la Llebre, 3, 17004 Girona, Spain
Editor's Review
Tucked on a small square and down a flight of stairs is La Fabrica Girona, a grotto of coffee delights run by former pro-cyclist Christian Meier and his wife Amber. That, in part, explains the preponderance of lycra-glad customers, but they are not drawn by the venue's association with cycling alone – La Fabrica serves good coffee and food, and provides a welcoming, cool atmosphere in this beautiful, genteel city.
Coffee comes from Espresso Mafia, Christian and Amber's other café in Girona, and a range of food, focussing mostly on the brunch/lunch period, is served from an open kitchen behind the counter. The space is pleasantly cocoon-like, a stone-walled basement area that manages to be at once relaxing and vibrant, as staff buzz around and a steady stream of customers come and go. There is also outdoor seating on the tiny square, which gives a good architectural flavour of medieval Girona. There's a range of books, own-branded cycle kit and t-shirts, and other coffee ephemera available – to buy beans or brewing kit, though, you need to hit Espresso Mafia.
While La Fabrica certainly attracts the cycling crowd due to its links with the sport (and the area itself is flush with two-wheelers), there is more than enough about the café to draw in customers of any persuasion. Informal, friendly, and in a beautiful location, it's well worth a visit.
