They started with a modest café in the largely residential Heights neighborhood, but a few years on, and modcup is now a pretty major presence in Jersey City, with three cafés and a roaster all within city limits. This location, just across the street from the massive Mana Contemporary arts center, houses modcup’s roastery, offices, and a nice public café space to boot. As per their name, the company favors cool mod imagery, and they deliver a great local café vibe, with a cool selection of R&B, mod and punk on the stereo, lots of good seating, and baristas who always have a few minutes to chat. They can brew you an espresso, pour you a nitro cold brew, or prepare nearly any manner of filter method.

They take coffee seriously here, working directly with farms for both their single-origin options, as well as the Secret Affair espresso blend. Their roast profiles tend towards fresh, clean flavors, letting the fruit speak loudly. They also make a lovely cascara tea, homemade chai, and any number of other specialty drinks, and they stock a limited pastry and cookie selection from Colson. Though located in Journal Square, the busy commercial area of Jersey City, modcup sits off the beaten path, and the pace here is usually leisurely, with artists and fans from Mana as the main customer base.
