Papercup Coffee Company
603 Great Western Rd, Glasgow G12 8HX, UK
Editor's Review
Chances are, if there are people queuing outside a cafe, sheltering from the rain while a table becomes available, there's probably something special going on inside. Papercup Coffee Company's Great Western Road site isn't the biggest in town, and so this is a site you'll see often. It's definitely worth the wait. Papercup's own roastery is also based in the West End, and their small batch roasts are the stars of the show here — you'll also find them at other cafes around the city. The team have excellent direct trade links with farms in Africa and South America, and the knowledge they have for their coffee extends to the skill with which it is prepared. If it's on offer, be sure to try their Ethiopia Ato Esmael variety, which has complex honeyed sweetness, and is a rare find in these parts.
There's a charming kind of scrappiness to Papercup — tables, chairs, and the counter have a weathered look about them, but the place is devoid of pretention. This extends to their food offerings too — Biscuits and Gravy that could have come from any Deep South diner are a real highlight. If you're exploring Glasgow's West End, Kelvingrove Park, or the Botanic Gardens, you won't be too far away from Papercup — add it to your itinerary.
