Papercup Coffee Roasters

Editor's Review
If you find yourself searching for Papercup Coffee's Great Western Road branch, and seats are at a premium, then this is a very good fact to have up your sleeve. A bit further down Great Western Road, towards Kelvinbridge, behind the main road a little bit, you'll find their roastery — it's open, bright, and brilliantly secret.
A small, Toper roaster whirrs away in the corner of an open plan unit, hooked to a laptop, keeping check on every aspect of the roast. Beside it, on the shop floor itself, huge burlap sacks of coffee beans are piled up — it's temping to want to sit on them, but we imagine it's frowned upon. The experience of drinking a coffee in a roastery is like eating a Full English whilst seeing how the sausage gets made. The appreciation of what you're drinking is heightened as you bare witness to the process.
Papercup keep three of their roasts on at all times — my trip had an Espresso and Batch Brew from El Salvador, and a Filter from Colombia. There's also a neat tasting guide pinned up on the storecupboard door. My black coffee had mild, milk chocolate sweetness with good acidity, and a light walnutty aftertaste. There's a couple of cakes on the counter, but unsurprisingly, this place is all about the coffee, and very little gets in the way of that.
