Peregrine Espresso — 14th Street
1718 14th St NW, Washington, DC 20009, USA
Editor's Review
Don't be confused by Peregrine's name. Despite any references to falcons you initially see, the café's name means "foreign, roving, and wandering." This D.C. mainstay boasts local brews from Small Planes coffee (their related roasting operation) and is famous for friendly baristas (many of whom have competed on behalf of the company) and coffee events.
It's clear the 10-year-and-counting franchise is committed to the craft. Their second location in MidCity feels the bustle and commotion of the nearby historic U Street neighborhood while maintaining a simple interior. Like the Eastern Market home base, this small but calming café also has similar red brick accent walls, light wood accents and a funky, lime green paint job that somehow doesn't overwhelm the space.
A standard milk-espresso beverage menu is complimented with a small but mighty menu of rotating single origin pour-overs and filter brews. If you're looking for something different, a wide list of Rishi teas are at the ready, and a few cold-pressed juices serve as a healthy alternative. While a full breakfast menu isn't available, a few yogurt-granola options make Peregrine a grab-and-go kind of cafe as well.
