Roots, Fruits & Flowers
457 Great Western Rd, Glasgow G12 8HH, UK
Editor's Review
You can’t miss Roots, Fruits and Flowers on Great Western Road. Just up from Kelvinbridge Subway Station, the shop takes over two premises and spills out onto the street with abundant produce and seating — this is matched inside, with a well served cafe right in the middle of the shop floor. It’s a hard balance to strike, running a cafe and a grocery simultaneously, but Roots, Fruits and Flowers get it spot on. A long deli counter is the first thing you see, filled with salads, sandwiches, and plenty of home-made vegan and vegetarian options. Independent roaster Charlie Mills, also Glasgow based, supplies the cafe’s coffee — his roasts are warm, dark, and full flavoured, with sweet chocolatey notes when paired with milk. Seats line the windows, with a larger table in the middle, seating four. The team work hard at making sure everything comes out quickly, and you never feel like you’re intruding on people doing their shopping.
It can’t be overstated that the shop is also just quite beautiful, in that way whole foods style stores often are — exposed wood, the faint smell of herbs and spices, plenty of fresh produce, and the pleasing thrum of an espresso machine cutting through everything. There’s not a great deal like it in the West End.
