Oost, Amsterdam’s bustling eastern borough, has no shortage of nosheries. Your best bet, however, to get not only delicious coffee, but also delectable cake, is Rum Baba. Literally a cornershop, this colourful cafe spreads over a split-level floor and two rooms. Large windows invite in the light, making the locale just as uplifting to individuals seeking solo time as to groups of friends needing a catch-up huddle. On warmer days, generous outdoor seating lets you feel even more native to the neighbourhood.

For lunch, homemade toasties are fashioned from cheese and meats from the butcher down the block – though save room for the first-rate dessert options that make Rum Baba more than a coffee business. A few doors west is where the magic happens; besides being in the business of turning green beans brown, the Rum Baba Roastery functions as the company’s baking headquarters. Note: it makes for an ideal spillover spot should the cafe be too crowded.
