Satan's Coffee Corner
Carrer de l'Arc de Sant Ramon del Call, 11, 08002 Barcelona, Spain
Editor's Review
Credited with being the first speciality coffee venue in Barcelona, Satan's Corner (which is, oddly, ironically even, in the shadow of the older of Barcelona's two main cathedrals) is still pumping out high quality coffee in this quirky little café. The bar is open and one must pass by it to get to the seating area; if you're just there for takeaway, the bar has a hatch through which you're served. The coffee itself comes from local roasters Right Side and is pretty dark and punchy – it's also available to buy and take with you. There is seating inside and an open kitchen serving salads, hot and toasted sandwiches, and cakes and pastries are also available.
Marcos Bartolomé, who set up Satan's, started his coffee life with a machine set up on a table – such was the popularity of his pioneering work, he quickly tried to find somewhere more fixed to call home. Initially, this was coffee served through a hatch in a stationary shop's window and subsequently inside a bicycle shop. Satan's true home is now in the Barri Gòtic, which is worth a visit in its own right, and Marcos continues to work with Right Side to create bespoke blends for this and Satan's other venue – still a pioneer, even as Barcelona's scene expands.
