The Cran
994 Argyle St, Glasgow G3 8LU, UK
Editor's Review
Finnieston is something of a dream for coffee lovers in Glasgow, with The Cran one of its real highlights. This small, characterful coffee shop has the energy and warmth of a pop-up, but luckily its home amongst the bars and cafes of Argyle Street is a permanent one.
The pop-up vibe is to be expected though. While The Cran is a permanent residence, it offers a space to local businesses and artisans to display their wares. One week you could find art on the walls, the next zines and comic books for sale. Low benches, mis-matched upholstery and shared seating give the cafe a mediterranean, almost shisha bar vibe. Nets, ropes and ship’s wheels amongst the bric-a-brac on the walls point to Glasgow’s storied industrial history, for which Finnieston played an integral role.
It, like many places in Glasgow, also boasts excellent vegan and vegetarian food - the veggie haggis breakfast samosa is an absolute must. The rotational ethos also extends to the roasters you’ll find at The Cran, with a focus on Scotland’s artisan coffee scene - Edinburgh’s Machina and North Berwick’s Steampunk are two regulars in the grinder.
