The Gentlemen Baristas (Jerwood)
Jerwood Space, 171 Union St, SE1 0LN
After the success of their original location and their café inside the Building Centre in Store Street, The Gentlemen Baristas bring their brand of politeness, good humour and fine food and coffee to the Jerwood Centre, just down Union Street from their original location. Jerwood Space, home to Jerwood Visual Arts with its regular exhibitions and rehearsal and meeting rooms, is named after John Jerwood, an international business and philanthropist. Jerwood was involved in the pearl business in Japan and in this café, Jerwood Space have perhaps their own pearl.
The Gentlemen Baristas team have made the most of the increased kitchen space here, which allows them to offer an all-day brunch menu, salad bar and daily specials alongside cakes and pastries. Loose leaf tea is from Chash Teas and, as always, the coffee offer ranges in terms of roasts – from darker to lighter to suit a range of customer tastes and a range of drinks. The Gentlemen Baristas work alongside Wogan Roasters of Bristol to select coffee beans and roast profiles to create their own label coffees. Guests coffees are often available, notably including Strangers from Norwich and Neighbourhood from Liverpool.
If you’re in the something else, the license on this site allows for wine, beer on tap and spirits. Non-alcoholic options include LA Brewery’s excellent kombucha or the Gentlemen Baristas’ own cold brew. Coffee options include batch brew, Chemex and Kalita Wave and there’s plenty of space to sit – including garden seating, perhaps a rarity rare in a London cafe.
