The Greenhouse Deptford
481 New Cross Rd, London SE14 6TA, UK
Editor's Review
The Greenhouse Deptford is between New Cross and Deptford, on the corner of New Cross Road and Watson’s Street and barely a ten-minute stroll from Goldsmith’s University, so expect an onslaught of students during term time. It serves the area as a new type of ‘local’; the breakfasts, brunches and lunches are all made with locally sourced ingredients (bread, milk, eggs and meat), and not only is the food from nearby, the Alchemy coffee is South London through and through. And the choice remains broad – Iced Latte to Dirty Chai, Cappuccino to Piccolo.
The walls are decorated with murals by artists from around the borough, while the room somehow keeps an understated and unshowy feel. It is called Greenhouse for a reason: it is run on green renewable energy, supports other similarly sustainable small businesses and you can even get a take-away coffee guilt-free as it comes in compostable cups. Their eco-conscience is ceaseless, so ask further about where any products come from, and you won’t be disappointed. Ethical and unpretentious, this is a true community café.
