The Kettle Black
50 Albert Rd, South Melbourne VIC 3205, Australia
Editor's Review
Trying to keep this short will be hard – The Kettle Black is like something taken out of design, coffee, or food magazines separately and then amalgamated into a beautiful Victorian Era home front, the last remaining one on the street. Now roasting their own coffee with former baristas via sister company Square One, there are some sensational coffees to compliment a noteworthy crafted food menu. The house blend consists of South American and African coffee with balanced body and flavour notes subtly cutting through milk. There are also seasonal coffees, a single origin for black coffees, and a couple of options for filter running through batch brew and v60. Filters are served in cups made by a local ceramicist, Kate Hill, who uses reclaimed clay.
There’s no skimping on the coffee cart outside either, used to help ease flow for takeaways on the busier day – a 2 group Synesso and Mythos 1 ensure quality matches what you find inside and it's a great option if you're pushed for time. The whoel venue is seamlessly run even during peak times with a great crew striding about, ensuring the great coffee never stops flowing.
