The Smile
26 Bond St., New York, NY 10012
Editor's Review
NYC's The Smile—which also serves as a photo studio and a newsstand—is a Counter Culture account, and its original subterranean location on Bond Street drips with first-date night vibes. Located inside a landmark 1830s Federal-style townhouse, make your way down the small set of footsteps to a rustic getaway filled with elegant antique light fixtures, stone walls, and worn-in woods and cement beams.
The Smile functions mostly as a restaurant with an upscale affair of Mediterranean and American brunch classics, savory sandwiches, and sumptuous evening entrees of meticulously prepared meats (a Greek menu is served every Sunday evening). The coffee menu is simple and sweet—and by sweet we mean it's attached to the dessert and wine menu, where you can grab a drip or standard espresso beverage (soy and almond are the non-dairy milks). The Smile may not be the best place to set up a laptop and get some work done (no WiFi here), but it sure is an ideal spot for romance and people watching.
