The Yellow Chair
56 Võ Văn Tần, Phường 6, Quận 3 Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam
Editor's Review
Among the many coffee houses visited in Saigon, The Yellow Chair stands out as memorable. Tucked away on a narrow and easy-to-miss side street just off Võ Văn Tần road, sits a beautiful French Colonial building. In fact, upon entering you will feel more like you have been invited into someone’s home rather than a café. Inside The Yellow Chair the city swell fades away and you can easily be mistaken for thinking you’re anywhere else, like the rural hills of Đắk Lắk or Gia Lai where owner Nguyễn Thị Kim Hạnh and her family have grown coffee for generations.
The Yellow Chair roast their own coffee branded under the name of both owners, Kim & Kim. They roast, sell and serve high quality coffee including Catimor and Catuai Arabica beans, as well as a more traditional French roasted Robusta. Fittingly, filter coffees are served in floral China cups and the coffee delicately brewed to allow for an unhindered and full flavour. Speak to owner Hạnh and she will tell you all about her family’s history with coffee; Hạnh even organises coffee tasting and trips to learn more about the farming process direct from source.
Just as I finished chatting to Hạnh, I asked what I assume a lot of customers must ask: “Where’s the yellow chair?”. Hạnh’s response: “The chair is something for you to imagine. Imagine a rocking chair to take a breath. Yellow represents peace and happiness”.
