Toast
65 Shore, Edinburgh EH6 6RA, UK
Editor's Review
Toast is Leith's first, and as far as we're aware only, wine cafe. It might in fact be the only wine cafe in the city, certainly the only one that bills itself as such. Taking up a beautiful location by the Shore, with its large corner window looking straight out onto the Water of Leith, its attempt to cover all bases is ambitious, but they've made a good start. There is a sense of opulence to Toast's offering. A glass fronted case displays beautiful tarts from Stockbridge's Patisserie Madeleine, and Haymarket's Grams. A gleaming La Marzocco sits up on the counter, one of the few places in town to be serving up Monmouth Coffee, and there is plenty of wine to choose from around the room. In terms of the decor, Toast bridges the gap between casual afternoon and elegant evening very nicely, with wooden floors and exposed brick working nicely in tandem.
Toast fits well with the rest of the Shore's offering. Boutique roastery Williams & Johnson is a short walk away, two michelin starred restaraunts are nearby, and architecturally it is incredibly unique in the city — if you landed there having never been to Edinburgh before, you might guess at Scandinavia before Scotland. However, they're trying something different, and doing it well. Keep an eye out for their evening events.
