Trakteren

Editor's Review
Its name is the Dutch word for “to treat”; that may be hard to pronounce for newcomers, but everything else at Trakteren is easy. Established in 2012 by Edward Beumer and Erik Oosterhuis, the cafe has something for everyone. Seventy per cent of the coffee, served in house and sold by the bag, is Trakteren’s own brand, provided by private-label roaster Spot On. That selection along with the duo’s dynamism – each has won various Dutch AeroPress Championship and are lauded for their latte art – means there is satisfaction to be had both by acidity-welcoming filter sippers and darker roast-inclined espresso-shooters. With a friend who doesn’t even do coffee?
This place also takes its teas seriously, thoughtfully matching loose leaves with appropriate brew methods. And if that weren’t enough, the unique array of chocolate – many single-origin bars produced by companies with reputations for organic, fair and sustainable practices – is sure to treat.
