Underline Coffee
511 W 20th Street, New York, NY 10011
Editor's Review
This coffee shop under the High Line is anything but lowbrow. They're pulling out all the stops in this tiny, dark, and narrow space, from AeroPress to a "thermochromatic slow bar" to hard-to-find infusions of cascara tea, and the baristas are more than happy to engage with you over a handcrafted pour and a red velvet cookie. They used to feature Counter Culture and some other excellent brands, but now roast their own beans under the name Apes and Peacocks, and there has been not a bit of slippage in the quality – these guys know their coffee.
Treats are from Balthazar and Ovenly, and they make a nice selection of toasts and other simple plates in their own small kitchen onsite. It’s not a big space, and surrounded by stylish galleries and the always-packed highline scene, it can get busy at times, but if there is no room to sit inside, check out the small rock garden they installed out front, where you can sit in and gaze off at the throngs of tourists passing by above.
