Usagi
163 Plymouth St, Brooklyn, NY 11201, USA
Editor's Review
Usagi café is a true DUMBO gem, a nearly hidden Japanese coffee bar tucked away in the back of an equally inspiring gallery and shop, just off of Jay Street near the water. They typically have four or five pour-over options available, including a decaf selection, as well as regular filter coffee, espresso, Mizudashi Japanese-style cold brew, Thai iced coffee, and an inspired selection of Japanese tea, including Matcha and Hojicha latte, served hot or over ice. All the coffee is from Brooklyn micro-roaster 95 RPM, and the tea is sourced from 300-year-old Kyoto-based purveyor Ippodo. They also make their own poke bowls here, in collaboration with chef Yasuhiro Homma from Hell's Kitchen restaurant Method, and bring in bento boxes daily from Sakagura in midtown Manhattan.
The mood is tranquil and welcoming, with several areas to lounge or sit throughout the large gallery space, and plenty of interesting objects to look at. Coffee is only a small part of this operation, but they take it very seriously, and Usagi is a must-visit spot if you are spending time in DUMBO.
