Workshop Coffee (Fitzrovia)
80A Mortimer Street, Fitzrovia, W1W 7FE
Editor's Review
Not content with just one new location this year, Workshop have just opened their second site of the summer and fourth overall. And what a site it is.
Joining Curators, Kaffeine and Mother's Milk in the rapid proliferation of specialty coffee in the Fitzrovia area, cafe number four embraces its Victorian surroundings gloriously. The coffee bar on Mortimer Street, sat jauntily next to a Starbucks on the corner, is a polished little gothic gem. The bar itself is small and narrow but packed full of enough detail to satisfy a magpie. Attention is first drawn to what has to be the prettiest bar top in London, a gleaming, Madagascan granite that sparkles with semi-precious veins of blue and turquoise; the walls are a rich and vibrant teal against concrete. On closer inspection I notice beautiful tiles lining shelf tops and an undercurrent of gold (taps, gilt-edged tables and inlaid seams on the counter itself) that lends a flamboyant, Italian impression - this could almost be a classical espresso bar.
The coffee however is far from Italian. I have a delightful single origin AeroPress and an espresso of the latest Cult of Done that really sings. The baristas here create an environment you'll want to linger in, to fill up that bar, spill out onto the small outside area and lean nonchalantly on the railings.
