The World AeroPress Championships: Steven Moloney

Steven Moloney, creator of The Barista League, will be representing Sweden in the World AeroPress Championships, having won the Swedish competition. Below, he answers our AeroPress Championship competitor questions. You can follow his journey on The Barista League's instagram: @thebaristaleague.

Why did you choose to enter the AeroPress Championship?

I’ve always loved the AeroPress competitions and their total disregard for still traditional competitions. I love that the focus is on having a great time, rather than on pages of rules. You rarely have a bad time at an AeroPress competition so why not sign up and have a crack?

What’s your favourite way to make coffee (other than AeroPress of course!)?

Typically, I brew with a V60, but basically anything nice and easy that you can do before your eyes properly open in the morning.

What led you to using the AeroPress?

I think AeroPress was the first brewer I ever bought, actually. I liked that you don’t need a kettle or anything else; it has all you need and you can do a lot with it and it is practically unbreakable.

Which grinder will you use for the competition and why?

I have a timemore hand grinder that a friend has lent me for travels and now apparently the WAC’s.

How did you get in to the coffee industry?

When I moved from Australia to Sweden back in 2012, I couldn’t find a job in the industry I was working in at the time. I found a job at a small café in Malmö and was lucky enough to meet the then barista champ of Sweden (also Swedish AeroPress champion) who I pestered constantly until he gave me a job a few years later at a roastery in the south of Sweden. Coincidentally, he is coming with me to Australia as my spiritual coach and drinking buddy.

What are you most excited about in coffee?

Getting to travel and meet people all around the world is the best.
